Hi there, I'm Valerie!

Valerie True, LCSW, working with adults 18 and older, focuses on life transitions, chronic and new medical diagnoses, grief and loss, caregiver issues, aging-related issues, work-related issues, stress, depression, and the growing pains of life. My approach is client-based, through talk and exercises we will work together to find the path that helps you gain insight and develop skills to support your goals.

My approach

During our sessions, we will talk about your goals, explore what is working and what is not, move towards increasing self-awareness, and work together to create actionable steps that support your growth. We will go at a pace that feels appropriate to your situation, and frequency of sessions that meets your needs. I come from a background incorporating the following theoretical approaches: Client Based, Strength Based, Solution Focused, Motivational Interviewing, with DBT, ACT, and CBT. While processing feelings and exploring the origins of dysfunctional coping skills is part of the work, we will not be primarily focused on psychoanalysis.

My focus

Adult-focused, 18-80's, my experiences have focused on major life transitions and adjustment disorders, including new jobs, relocations, divorce, grief and loss, adult caregiver issues, coping with new and chronic medical conditions, and all the symptoms these life transitions can bring up.

My communication style

We will connect via telehealth, we will turn off other electronics that may interrupt or distract. We want to create a comfortable, safe environment where you feel open to expressing yourself, so private on my end and private on your end. This is your time, but part of my role is to keep us focused on the purpose you are seeking supportive therapy. I will want to understand the communication style that is effective for you, but I lean towards a direct, open communication style.

My journey to mental healthcare

I enjoy helping others learn to improve their lives and situations, I believe everyone needs help sometimes, and working with others keeps me engaged in the journey of life.

My goals for you

During our initial sessions, we will talk about what brings you to therapy, find out if you have specific goals, explore what those may be, break down goals into manageable bites, and develop a treatment plan on a timeline that feels reasonable.

My first session with you

We will talk about what brings you to therapy, explore your history with therapy, we will identify your strengths and what is working for you, and begin to identify some of the barriers or places where you feel stuck. We will talk about making a treatment plan and timeline in sessions one and two, and re-evaluate the plan as we move forward.
