Hello! My name is Dr. William Brock or Dr. Bill, and I have been practicing for over 30 years as a licensed psychologist in California. I have a Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) in psychology from the University of Southern California. I also have credentials in school psychology and counseling. My training includes an extensive background in CBT (Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy) as well as many other evidence-based treatment approaches to therapy. I work with adults with a wide range of anxiety, depression, substance use, and other compulsive behaviors.
My approach
The approach that I take is Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), a term that includes a number of science-based strategies and skills, including education, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, mindfulness-based approaches, and others. We will examine what we are thinking about the situations in our lives and, if we are not satisfied with the outcomes, we will figure out more helpful ways to approach the situations. We will examine the habits and patterns that we want to increase and those that we want to stop or decrease.
My focus
I work with adults ages 18 and up and I can work with you on a variety of problems. For the past 20 years, I have worked with adults with a wide range of mood disorders (anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder) and substance use issues. I have also worked with individuals with behavioral addictions such as gambling, internet use, pornography, and compulsive sexual behavior.
My communication style
My goal is to provide a positive and supportive environment that allows you to examine your life and your values so that you can make positive changes. I strive to create a comfortable and calm environment to support you as you make important changes in your life.
My journey to mental healthcare
I have always been interested in psychology, both because of my personal history and my working career. I have worked in many different settings with many different types of clients, including children and adults, developmentally disabled children and adults, seniors, and chronic psychiatric patients. I am passionate about guiding people to learn helpful approaches to managing life's challenges.
My goals for you
In our sessions, we will work together to identify unhelpful ways of thinking about problems, your core beliefs and values, and the barriers that are holding you back. We will identify the skills and strategies that will help you to successfully manage your emotional life.
My first session with you
Our first session(s) will include getting to know each other and an initial assessment that includes understanding the issues that have brought you to therapy, your history, diagnosis, treatment goals, and plans to achieve those goals. Beginning with the second session we will begin to learn and practice the skills and strategies that will help you to achieve your goals.
