I started out as an RN working in the ER and ICU/CCU. During that time, I became curious about therapy after watching a couple I knew improve dramatically from their experience. I did several years of therapy, including group, and fell in love with gaining the ability to be able to step back and see myself more objectively. I appreciated how therapy lets you choose new options, make better choices, and achieve a happier and more fulfilling life.
My approach
As a licensed marriage and family therapist I favor using a family systems and Rogerian approach, along with cognitive behavioral and solution-focused techniques, and motivational interviewing. These emphasize awareness of the whole - how to connect with oneself, family, community, and society. The process involves feeling empowered by developing insights that lead to creating productive behaviors and experiencing wellbeing with life satisfaction in the present.
My focus
Someone who is ready to make positive change, can step up and is willing to take themselves on, is open to introspection and motivated to risk healthier ways of being.
My communication style
I like to be very tuned into what the client wants and needs, so I expect there will be a two-way dialog for much of the time. It's not a one-way street.
My journey to mental healthcare
I have a masters in counseling psychology, an LMFT license, and a very eclectic background. This includes being a nurse, getting lots of bodywork and other somatic therapies, breath work, participating in meditation retreats, and further training in the areas I mentioned above, besides accruing many hours with clients over 30 years. My passion is to help people move beyond codependency, which led me to write a workbook, Start with Connection: Experience Heart-Brain Listening and Understanding.
My goals for you
Checking back each session to see where you are at since first starting therapy, including what goals you have accomplished so far. Noting progress by how symptoms that formerly blocked wellbeing are reduced, to feel less anxious, be able to self-soothe, are clear about personal needs and having the ability to self-activate to take care of them in healthy ways. This includes being comfortable speaking up for oneself and holding appropriate boundaries.
My first session with you
I like to get a basic history, catch up on any past therapy experience or traumas, and inquire about what you want now and how you hope I can help you. What are you expecting my role to be? Also, to share anything you wouldn't want to have happen in a session.
