Hi, I am Laura Lien-Mitobe, LMFT. My primary goal as a therapist is to partner with you to provide an affirming, client-centered, non-judgmental, caring, supportive, safe space for you to explore experiences, patterns, and feelings that may be causing you pain and/or hindering your personal goals and growth.
My approach
My experience includes therapy with individuals, couples, families, and groups. Person-centered, Trauma-focused, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Solution-focused therapies are some of the therapy modalities that I use. But most importantly, the therapy must be affirming and tailored to the needs of the client.
My focus
I have worked with all age groups as individuals, couples, families, and the LGBTQ+ community. I am experienced with trauma, pet loss therapy, grief, anxiety, depression, and compassion fatigue. I have a special interest in supporting LGBTQ+ people who are coming out later in life. Their issues are often complex and different from those that came out young. I also help spouses and family members who are adjusting to a love one's coming out.
My communication style
I have a low-key supportive, friendly style. I strive to provide a safe, non-judgmental approach that allows the client to feel comfortable and establish trust. Therapy is a big step. Sometimes it is uncomfortable, even painful when sensitive issues are explored. It is essential that clients feel safe and trust me to help them through the "hard stuff." I believe clients have underlying strengths that they can tap into. I am there to help them discover their strengths and develop strategies for a more fulfilling life.
My journey to mental healthcare
I always had a desire and propensity for helping people. I was "that person" who people talked to, even as a kid. I started college and took psychology and child development with a specialty in child mental health. As I progressed in my studies, being a therapist was a natural fit. I was also a teacher for many years. Teaching definitely utilized my therapy skills. During the pandemic, I decided to return to therapy exclusively and I have no regrets.
My goals for you
I have a strong belief that goals are met by setting achievable, incremental goals. The client explores what life might look like if they achieved their goals (reduced anxiety/depression, improved relationships, etc.). Then we work as partners to break goals down into increments that cannot fail to be successful. As the incremental steps are actualized the client approaches the overall goal. Mistakes or not making the mark are learning experiences that inform the client of adjustments that may need to be made. Progress is made one step at a time.
