My name is Olena Prokopenko. I am a licensed professional clinical counselor in California. I use a psychological flexibility framework, mindfulness-based tools, hypnotherapy, and psychodynamic approaches to explore the roots of behavioral/emotional/mental/spiritual imbalances and to help my clients find balance in their lives.
My approach
I use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy which utilizes the psychological flexibility framework to help clients understand why they think the way they do and how to think in a way that helps them move forward rather than stay stuck. I use mindfulness-based approaches in order to practice hands-on tools for self-regulation. I use psychodynamic approaches and hypnotherapy in order to address relationship dynamics that originated earlier in life and to move past habitual patterns.
My focus
If I were to briefly summarize the majority of my clients, I would say they often have Highly Sensitive Personalities and they struggle with anxiety, overwhelm, self-regulation, and mood issues. They are often seeking a sense of meaning in their lives beyond daily struggles and accomplishments.
My communication style
I create an environment in my sessions that embraces unconditional positive regard for my clients and their struggles, while at the same time, talking openly regarding issues that we are addressing. I welcome humor and playfulness so that sessions feel warm and friendly!
My journey to mental healthcare
When I was having my first child, I explored using hypnotherapy as a tool to help with labor and childbirth. It was very effective and I went on to help others with hypnosis. I quickly realized that I wanted more depth and understanding of the way the mind works so I could hold space for clients to address pressing issues and find fulfillment in their lives.
My goals for you
It's important to have clearly defined goals including ones that are easy to measure. I use scales in order to be able to determine if a client is making progress. The most important part of the process is helping clients find goals that are based on their values, and what it is that's most important to them in their lives.
My first session with you
My first session usually involves reviewing all the important areas of my client's life, determining my client's goals for therapy, and advising my client on what approaches I will use with them if we move forward with our work together.
