My name is Jessica Hassen, and I am a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT). I am based out of Long Beach, CA, and work with clients statewide via telehealth. I work with adolescents, adults, and couples who struggle with anxiety, depression, and relationship/communication issues. I have spent my time as a therapist providing a safe and supportive environment for people to gain perspective on their lives, strengthen relationships with others, and advocate for themselves.
My approach
I do my best to tailor my approach to the needs of each client I work with. I most often integrate techniques from Solution-Focused and Gestalt therapies, all while keeping a Systemic and Strengths-Based lens. This helps in viewing the client as a part of a larger whole and allows the client to have competence and confidence as we find a path forward.
My focus
I typically work with adolescents and young adults who are dealing with the challenges that come with life transitions, social pressures, and increased independence. I also work with couples, married or not, to help them find new ways to communicate their needs, break down cycles of conflict, and redefine their relationship. Most often, my clients struggle with family conflict, peer relationships, communication, self-esteem, coping skills and stress, anxiety, depression, and self-harm. I work with my clients to explore but also develop different perspectives about their struggles so they can feel more confident moving forward and have a more positive outlook on life.
My communication style
My communication style is calm and personable while also being direct and challenging assumptions. I want my clients to be their authentic selves in sessions and feel comfortable talking with me about anything without fearing judgment or rejection. If something isn't working in our sessions, I encourage my clients to let me know so that we can pivot as necessary. This helps build trust in our work as I am not the expert in the client's life; they are.
My first session with you
In an initial session, I will spend the majority of the time listening to what the client has been experiencing recently and what brought you to seek sessions. I'll ask questions along the way to better understand your perspective and feelings, as well as discuss some initial goals for our work. The priority is to start building trust and help the client feel supported; everything else can come after.
