Hi, my name is Prynzessin Carney, and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) based in Southern California. I meet with adult clients from diverse backgrounds all around the state via telehealth. I help clients who struggle with poor self-esteem, depression, anxiety, and other mental health concerns using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Mindful Self Compassion Therapy (MSC). My goal in therapy is to help my clients identify and meet their treatment goals.
My approach
My approach to therapy varies according to my client’s needs. I most often use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Mindful Self Compassion (MSC) as these therapeutic modalities aid me in helping clients to identify their goals and offer concrete tools for meeting those goals.
My focus
I typically work with adult clients from diverse backgrounds who are having trouble managing symptoms related to depression and anxiety. These symptoms may be the result of past trauma, stressors of everyday life, and, at times, poor self-compassion. I work to aid my clients in gaining clarity and coping skills so that they will be better equipped to navigate the difficulties in their lives.
My communication style
My communication style is engaged, calm, and empathetic. I strive to foster an environment in which my client feels at ease to express themselves without judgment and to feel heard.
My journey to mental healthcare
Therapy appealed to me because it not only suited my personality but also spoke to my personal values. I am by nature empathetic and inquisitive and have a passion for helping others. I also want to be of service and help those who are often marginalized to feel heard and understood. As a Black American woman, I bring a unique perspective to the field of therapy, and that is what I believe is one of the most exciting aspects of this profession. The opportunity to hear and bring forward different points of view while being of service is exciting and rewarding. Being a therapist is not only an occupation but a calling, and I am grateful that I heeded the call.
My goals for you
Therapy goal setting for me is a collaborative process. I believe that you, the client, are the expert in your life, and my role is to aid and/or guide you in identifying your needs and goals in therapy.
My first session with you
The first meeting is about us getting to know each other. I will ask you what brought you to therapy and inquire about how you have been feeling recently. I will answer any questions you have about myself and my therapeutic style. My goal is to create a relaxing environment in which you feel comfortable sharing your story with me.
