Hi, I am Dr. Bongjoo Hwang. I am a licensed psychologist with a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and a Master's degree in Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling. I work collaboratively with my clients to help them make positive changes by meeting the clients where they are and utilizing client-centered and integrative approaches.
My approach
I use an integrative approach drawing from client-centered, cognitive behavioral therapy, relational, psychodynamic, system's and other approaches to meet the client's specific needs.
My focus
I love working with diverse clients from diverse backgrounds who are dealing with issues like anxiety, depression, identity, relationships, and life change difficulties. As a Korean immigrant myself, I have great knowledge and experience in working with Asian/ Asian Americans, People of Color, and immigrants. My 20+ years of work experience at different university counseling centers also helped me develop strong interests and expertise in working with college students and young professionals.
My communication style
I create a nonjudgmental, inviting, and welcoming environment so that my clients feel comfortable being who they are in the session.
My journey to mental healthcare
My own healing journey helped me find meaning in helping others through mental health counseling. Seeing my clients get better makes me get going.
My goals for you
Therapy is a collaborative process between the therapist and the client. I work with my clients to create goals together during the first session after assessing the clients' issues.
My first session with you
During the first session, my clients will be asked about their problems, the history of their problems, and other related issues so that we can come up with a good treatment plan together. My clients will have a chance to ask me any questions they might have as well.
