Hello, my name is Andrea Wasserman, I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I am experienced in trauma related issues, relationship issues, family conflict, life transitions, job stress, anxiety, LGBTQI+ obstacles, disordered eating and depression. I utilize cognitive behavior therapy, mindfulness skills, family systems, reality therapy and voice and choice.
My approach
My therapeutic approach incorporates mostly cognitive behavioral therapy, however, I believe that there is no one approach in working towards mitigating or resolving trauma, uncomfortable feelings, life triggers, transitions, or anxiety. I believe it is a total mind and body relationship and together we must be able to utilize multiple modalities in supporting change, insight, awareness, and acceptance.
My focus
I mostly work with high functioning adults in a one-on-one situation. I work with LGBTQ+ issues, relationship issues, family conflict, life transitions, stress, anxiety, binge eating disorder and depression.
My communication style
I try and create a safe environment conducive for open dialogue and honest sharing. I believe that open communication builds trust. I provide an empathic space for my clients to express their own needs and wants, a space for them to be able to become emotionally expressive, and I provide a safe space for my clients to develop the skills needed to communicate clearly and confidently what they need and want in their relationships without hurting the people around them.
My journey to mental healthcare
I started my journey about 32 years ago, and have been working with individuals, children and families ever since. I have had experience with groups both with teens and adults. I have worked with individuals with severe trauma, abuse, eating disorders, drug and alcohol abuse, abandonment issues, attachment issues, and dual diagnosis. Now my focus is working with high functioning individual adults. I was told many years ago that I was an empath and I am drawn towards helping others. I believe that most people just want to be heard, and need some support and guidance. It has been a challenging past few years and I want to be part of the catalyst for change in a positive and supportive way.
My goals for you
I believe that by starting slow, setting specific goals, measurable and attainable and achievable goals that are relevant and time-bound my clients become more self assured and confident and this becomes the building blocks to continue building upon. I provide a supportive environment for my clients to want to continue to increase their chances of success and obtain positive outcomes.
My first session with you
During the first session, I will ask about your presenting concerns, as well as some history and background. I will ask about some struggles, and about a time that you can remember that things were good. I will ask about your family history, current relationships, interests, strengths, goals, and what you would like to achieve from therapy.
