My name is Jennifer Van Fosson-Roelfs and I am a Licensed Mental Health Therapist working throughout the state of Iowa providing telehealth services. I work with teens, young adults, individuals, and couples. I specialize in areas such as depression, anxiety, lgbtq+, grief and trauma.
My approach
My approach to therapy is based on the needs of each client when they enter therapy. I most frequently use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, along with Solution and Strength based approaches. These approaches allow me to engage with the client in creating trust and a relationship that supports growth.
My focus
I enjoy working with many different populations but generally see young adults, individuals and couples. Most conditions are depression, anxiety, relationships, transitioning periods of life, grief, disordered eating, addictions, trauma and lgbtq+. I help my clients gain skills to be the best versions of themselves.
My communication style
My communication style is open, engaging, and inviting. I strive to have them feel safe and heard with no judgment. I support but challenge individuals as needed and I encourage clients to make decisions based on their situations and needs. I provide alternative ideas and thoughts in which the client can utilize if it is the best fit for them.
My journey to mental healthcare
I was in middle school when I kept being told I had skills as a listener an some good advice. I've never looked back. I remain very passionate about being in this field and working with so many different populations that don't always have a voice. I feel it is a privilege to be able to be on someone's journey however long I am able to be.
My goals for you
I approach goal setting with clients from a team perspective. From the start of therapy I build a trusting and positive relationship so the client feels safe and not judged. I work to understand what the client needs from the therapy and develop goals based on the needs the client has identified.
My first session with you
My goal for the first session is always to create a space where you feel heard. We will spend time exploring what brings you to therapy at this time and I will ask questions to gain more insight into how your brain works. This is a time where I will listen to you and understand your needs for change. I provide support to you and encourage you for starting therapy.
