Hi! My name is Jean Snyder and I'm a Licenced Professional Counselor here in beautiful Michigan! I enjoy working with adults who are having difficulty coping with anxiety, depression, substance misuse, or a history of childhood abuse that they're trying to integrate. No matter what the issue is that you're coping with now, I want you to know that you are not your problem and you are not your pain! Let's work together to find your strength and your resilience.
My approach
The approach I like to use as a counselor relies heavily on listening closely to your concerns, teaching a variety of different coping skills, building on your strengths, and helping you to reach your personalized goals. CBT techniques as well as mindfulness, EFT tapping, DBT techniques, and developmental theory are incorporated into an electric approach to help you cope with your emotions and to help you to grow and reach your potential.
My focus
I find that I am drawn to working with people struggling with depression, anxiety, substance use issues, chronic pain, or who have a history of childhood abuse. I believe that people like this have a hidden well of strength that they may not be aware of now, but that they can tap into and I find great satisfaction in helping them to do exactly that.
My communication style
If you work with me, you will find that I am a pretty laid-back, casual, and relaxed person who likes to bring humor into my work. I firmly believe in using proven strategies that research has shown us are effective and so will often talk about research I have read as it pertains to you.
My journey to mental healthcare
I believe in my heart I need to work with and help people to live better lives. Throughout my life, I have worked in various jobs and even in different careers, but I was happiest and the most centered when this need was fulfilled.
My goals for you
Goal setting is done informally throughout the course of therapy. I like to do it this way because goals will often change as you grow and change with our time together. I want to address those issues that you believe are most important.
My first session with you
Understandably, many people are nervous during their first session. It's hard to open up on personal topics with someone you don't know. This is why in our first session together I tend to ask a lot of questions about what's been going on in your life and about your history. It helps me to get to know you, to understand what you want to address, and for us to start building a relationship. If at any time I ask a question that makes you uncomfortable or that you don't want to answer, I encourage you to tell me. I don't want you to feel forced to share information before you're ready to do so.
