I am Frederick Blum, Ph.D., LMFT. I have been providing therapy to clients since 1988 as a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT 23846) and since 2010 as a licensed Psychologist (PSY 23388). I have training and experience using different approaches to help clients resolve and manage anxiety, depression trauma, ADHD, parenting, couples conflicts, and additional problems presented by the clients I have served in therapy. I have successfully worked with children over age 5, teens, and adults. I have treated individuals, families, couples, and groups of various types. I will be happy to work with you to find solutions to the problems that you are facing. Creative solutions are available and waiting for you.
My approach
My approach is client-centered. I use many therapy tools to help find solutions to issues presented by my clients. Some are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, Prolonged Exposure, Narrative Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Supportive Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, and others. My focus is to collaborate with my clients to find the approach that meets his or her needs. I look forward to assisting you to find the solutions you are seeking, and the meaning and fulfillment you desire.
My focus
Often my clients enter therapy with a definite focus and goal in mind. Others want assistance to define their problem needs and then find solutions. I am comfortable with both. Frequently my client's concerns include anxiety, depression, Trauma (PTSD), ADHD skills learning, relationship issues, parenting, and co-parenting when a child is living between 2 different homes. I will be happy and count it a privilege to discover with you just what is needed in your life for more fulfillment, contentment, and harmony.
My communication style
Listening to my client's experience and struggles is first and foremost. Welcoming each person to therapy and exploring what each person expects and reducing any fears or anxiousness about being in therapy. I make the therapy session a very at-home and comfortable experience. I encourage each person to develop more self-awareness and together we find thoughts and feelings from present and past experiences to guide us to more satisfying future experiences.
My journey to mental healthcare
I became a therapist in my mid-thirties. This was after doing pastoring in Christian churches for several years and working with inner-city youth. I then took time to become totally self-supporting and worked in construction. I returned to Graduate school and studied Marriage and Family Therapy. Later, with continued classes over many years, I obtained a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and continued working with clients as a psychologist.
My goals for you
I ask each client to express his or her goals. We can use it to know when that goal is met. Together we will set goals in behavioral language that will be more easily followed and tracked for progress.
My first session with you
In the first session, after introductions, we will explore your reason for coming to therapy at this time. I want to hear about your current and past struggles to find a context for the present situation. Some detailed history and family history are usually a part of this first session. We will set a plan for follow-up and set some goals if we have them identified.
