My name is Judy Whitcher. I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) in the State of California. I have been licensed in California for 3 years and was licensed in Arkansas (previously) for 13 years. I approach therapy as a collaborative effort between client and therapist where we work together to identify what direction therapy needs to go and move towards that goal together.
My approach
I use whatever approach is needed for the clients' needs and goals but tend towards a Cognitive Behavioral Approach where we can change the negative thinking and take control of our emotions and behaviors as well as work on relaxation, mindfulness, and empowerment.
My focus
I have worked with many populations including children, families, school-based, community mental health, LGBTQ+ populations, geriatrics, and severely mentally ill. I am particularly interested in working with personality disorders, anxiety, LGBTQ+-related issues, and women's issues.
My communication style
When I work with clients, I tend to take a more relaxed approach and work on building a relationship of trust. I also try to be honest and direct with my clients and try to empower clients to move forward, make changes and achieve their goals.
My journey to mental healthcare
My journey to becoming a therapist started with my curiosity about why our minds work the way we do and why we do the things we do. I also wanted to help people, especially people who are hurting. I feel like so many of us feel we have no control over our lives and I want to help people get that control back and learn to be happy, healthy and live their lives to the fullest.
My goals for you
I work with clients on helping you to identify where they want to be and what changes they want to make in their life. Then we work collaboratively on setting goals that can get you there!
My first session with you
During the first session, I like to take some time getting to know the client, talking about what therapy is going to be like, what goals they would like to set, and answering questions. I also spend a lot of time working on getting the client comfortable. Therapy can be a very different experience and I want them to be comfortable and be able to open up and trust me and the process!
